Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul on Abortion Rights, New Firearm Tracing Database

WTTW | June 30, 2022

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul ran unopposed this week for the Democratic nomination to keep his office.

In November, he will face off against Republican Tom DeVore, an attorney who successfully fought against Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s mask mandates in public schools.

In an interview with “Chicago Tonight,” Raoul spoke about his office’s work to ensure access to abortion rights in Illinois.

“We put out guidance in anticipation of the Dobbs decision to make sure women know not to listen to misinformation about the status of abortion in the state of Illinois,” Raoul said. “It is a fundamental right and we let people know that.”

Raoul said he has also been meeting with other officials, including those in Wisconsin, to help deal with the influx of people who may travel to Illinois to access safe and legal abortions.

He also spoke about a recently launched statewide platform to trace guns involved in crimes.

“We made it easier to search, and to look at data and to look at trends such that we can crack down on those who are trafficking guns into our state,” Raoul said.
